Chapter

Fourteen

Hearing Tad’s theory wasn’t a complete shock, but even still I gasped and recoiled slightly.

If he were right and Hazel had found proof that the drug had failed, that gave everyone associated with the clinical trial a motive to kill her. Everything that I had learned and observed thus far lined up with that theory. Hazel had been acting so panicked about losing her flash drive at Nitro last night. What if the flash drive contained the real data?

It would also explain why Dr. Sutton, Jerry, and the rest of the research team had rushed to make the announcement tonight. Although I still was confused about Shep and Ren’s connection to the BioGold trial. Ren had mentioned something about patient care. As a nurse, what was his role? And Shep had made it clear that he wasn’t involved with the research at all. Then why were both the nurse and anesthesiologist constantly hanging around with Dr. Sutton and Jerry?

Would any of these healthcare providers who had sworn an oath to save lives have killed Hazel? That seemed far-fetched.

“I’m going to go to my office now.” Tad used all of his weight to push open the arched wooden door, allowing a blast of cold air inside. “I have to get to the servers before they find a workaround. I’m sure that Jerry is calling in support from BioGold. They’ve got a team of tech staff. If I could only find Hazel’s research notes.”

“You really need to let the police know,” I insisted.

“There’s no time.” His tone was harsh and filled with intensity. “You can tell them, but I have to get to the hospital right now. Jerry’s a smart guy. He’s evil, but he’s calculating. He didn’t outright threaten me, but I know he’s going to seize every piece of material at the hospital in connection with the clinical trial. He told me so a minute ago. BioGold is in this for the money and they aren’t going to stop until every single trace of Hazel’s data is permanently erased.”

Alpine air seeped through the door as he took off in a sprint.

The stakes were too high not to involve Chief Meyers. I called her cell. She didn’t answer, so I left a detailed message explaining everything Tad had told me and that she could find him at the hospital. He could be in danger. What if Jerry wanted him at the hospital? Maybe Jerry already had BioGold staff waiting for Tad.

The more time I spent thinking about the investigation, the more convinced I was that Hazel had been killed. If she had uncovered proof that BioGold had falsified their research, the implications were huge. It would also explain finding her bag near the ski lift. The killer must have been looking for her laptop. When they realized it wasn’t in the bag, they tossed it and took off.

Tad was convinced that Jerry had killed her, but what about the other doctors? Were they part of the conspiracy to announce a breakthrough that was actually a dead end? That didn’t make sense.
